May 28th, 2007I almost never watch TV.
It’s a stupendous waste of time. Who knows how many hundreds of millions of people squander the most productive days and years of their discretionary time, hypnotized by a stupid little box in their living room. Their life ebbs away 30 minutes at a time, minutes mostly better spent doing something (almost anything) else.
[The problem, by the way, all begins with giving a TV set the most prime real estate in the house, literally arranging furniture and lifestyle and family around it. Kinda hard to manage your life when the TV is actively competing on a minute-by-minute basis.]
Obviously I’m kind of tuned out to entire swaths of pop culture. But so far as I can tell, I’m not missing much.
Donald Trump’s Apprentice show was a welcome exception, however. We didn’t watch it live, but being generally tuned out anyway we had no idea who the winner was, and after the first season was over we got the DVD’s and watched the whole thing over Christmas break. It was fantastic.
Yes, at times it was a bit contrived, and from one season to the next the conflict between contestants seemed to get more and more tabloid. But for the most part, the assignments Trump gave the contestants were acid tests of wit, skill, planning and salesmanship. Watching that show sharpened my mind and Laura loved it just as much as I did.
The ever-daring Joel Comm is following suit with a reality show of his own: The next Internet Millionaire. He’s taking applications right now and once it commences, his faculty (which includes myself) will create challenging assignments which will be broadcast via streaming video over the summer. Enjoy the adventure.

P.S.: I dare you - if your TV is in the middle of the living area of your house, move it to your basement and LIBERATE yourself. Do it now.
